Another fantastic example is Mitty’s ability to grasp know-how in his daydreams versus his lack of ability to maneuver his automobile, or appropriately unwind tire chains (Koger, 2004). Walter’s “heroic ability” in his daydreams versus his inadequacies in the reality of the story is one instance (Koger, 2004).

Many examples are apparent contrasting one’s hopes and actuality. I really feel that Walter Mitty might have self-esteem points that he’s capable of overcome in his daydreams or, even higher, they do not exist. I agree that every one of these themes are displayed all through the story however, I consider one has been overlooked. According to Koger, there are four themes or meanings conveyed through this story which are “the contrast between a human being’s hopes for all times and its actuality, the facility of the mind or imagination, the conflict between the individual and authority, and the ascendancy of technology and materialism within the twentieth century” (Koger, 2004). Now moving on to the evaluation of this story, there are several meanings illustrated. As a daydreamer myself, I have experienced some of the identical frustrations depicted in this story, so I connected with the story immediately. Walter’s response is certainly one of self-defense stating “Does it ever occur to you that I am typically pondering.” This set the tone that Walter is letting his spouse know that just because he could appear misplaced, doesn’t make him mindless, or that she must keep after him the best way she does. Mitty is hassling Walter for not having the sense to put on his overshoes. ” When Walter makes several errors attempting to park the car, the pissed off attendant tells him to “leave her sit there, I’ll put her away.” When the attendant parks the car with some expertise, Walter replies “they’re so damn cocky, they think they know every little thing.” Probably the sharpest picture portrayed in the story is when Mrs. An occasion when a parking attendant awakens Walter from another daydream, the story reads “Mitty turns into somewhat testy. Walter’s frustration is expressed in the story several occasions as nicely.
